Do you get Sunday scaries 5 ways to banish them
Do you get Sunday scaries 5 ways to banish themDo you get Sunday scaries 5 ways to banish themAs the clock ticks ever closer to Sunday evening, you might recognize a sinking feeling in your heart. Ugh, another day at that dreaded distributionspolitik is what your mind tells you, as you reluctantly get yourself ready for the new week at work. This feeling is something we call the Sunday scaries (its like the scary cousin of a case of the Mondays)Whether its a powerful feeling that overcomes you on a weekly basis, or just a hint of fear that creeps up on you as realize your Sunday off is passing you by, getting the Sunday scaries is that feeling of dread before going back to work on Monday morning. The good news is that you dont have to feel that way. Take action to banish the Sunday scaries and get back to enjoying your weekend so that you feel rejuvenated as the new week begins. What causes the Sunday scaries?Everyone dreads Monday morning from time to time. But if you find yourself sin king into the Sunday blues week after week, something else is to blame. The Sunday scaries are a sign that youre not satisfied with the status quo. Perhaps you feel unfulfilled by your current job duties, youre overworked or underpaid, you got transferred to a new division and dont like your new coworkers, or you feel unsupported by your company. Or maybe youre just flat out bored.Everyones Sunday blues happen for a different reason, so the first step is to figure out whats trigging yours. Think about your ideal work position. What is the disconnect between your current job and that ideal, fantasy position? Imagine your boss came in tomorrow and said, I want you to do _____. How would you fill in that blank to feel more energized and excited about work?5 ways to banish the Sunday Scaries1. Re-evaluate your job dutiesWhen youre feeling stagnant at work, its a great time to talk to your supervisor about your role. A good manager is invested in your career growth and wants you to feel fulfilled. In many cases, taking on a more diverse set of duties can occur if you simply ask. Think about ways that you think your skills are going unused. Then, present your supervisor with an action plan. For example, I think my communication skills are my major strength, but I dont always feel like Im using them to the kollektivs greatest advantage. I would love to create a monthly e-newsletter to send to clients.2. Take advantage of growth opportunitiesIts in your organizations best interest to retain you, so many workplaces offer a variety of employee enrichment activities. Check out your companys offerings. Management classes, mentorship programs, educational workshops, or even graduate school tuition remission may be available to you. If these programs arent currently offered by your organization, ask This shows that you are excited about growing and developing your skills. The worst they can do is say no.3. Look for opportunities to leadIf youre invested in your current orga nization but feel like you just cant move up to the next level, look for opportunities to show management what youve got. Rather than following your job duties to the letter, go above and beyond. Speak up with ideas at team meetings, offer to take the lead on an upcoming project, or ask to be trained on a new process. This shows that youre invested in learning and leading, qualities that upper management will look for when making promotion decisions.4. Burnt out? Time to schedule that vacationBurnout doesnt do you or your organization any good. If youre feeling overworked and dreading going to the office on Monday, you wont be an effective employee. It might feel like you have way too much work to get away, but schedule your vacation anyway. Even if its just a long weekend, you will return feeling rejuvenated and ready (even excited) to jump back into your job.5. Sometimes its not you, its your workplaceIf youve tried to make changes at work but still feel that familiar Sunday dread , it might be time for a larger change. Initiating a job change isnt something you should do lightly, so take your time to do your research. Think about the qualities that youre looking for in a new workplace. Potential for advancement, using a certain skill set, developing new skills, salary, work-life balance, educational or enrichment opportunities, location, and company culture are all important considerations.Once youve made a wish list for your new job, start exploring opportunities in your desired area. Check out honest reviews about company culture to figure out what business place might be right for you. Sometimes the fit of the workplace is more important than the nitty gritty details of the job you do. Figuring out the right balance of job qualities and office culture is crucial to get back to loving your Sundays again.Linda Le Phan is the Content Marketing Manager at kununu US, a place where job seekers can get an authentic view of life at a company and where employers h ave a trusted platform to better engage talent. 3 Things You Might Not Know About Quitting Your Job
3 Things You Might Not Know About Quitting Yur Job3 Things You Might Not Know About Quitting Your JobSo, youve weighed all the pros and cons, and youve decided to resign from your current position. The decision could be a tough one or a no-brainer, but regardless, how you handle yourself- and your colleagues- after youve submitted that resignation letter is an important part of the process that many of us dont consider. If youre starting to plot your exit, consider these three tips to help smooth your transition and keep your reputation rock-solid after youre gone.1. Read Your ContractDeciding to quit your job will no doubt require you to consider a lot of factors. Pay, job satisfaction, and commute time probably come to mind, right? What many people forget, though, is the fine print. Depending on your role, you may have a contract with your current employer, which means how- and when- you resign will be important.Take one of my former colleagues several years back as an example. He h ad recently been transferred to my arbeitszimmer from another location out of state, which the company had sponsored. All his moving expenses, as well as a travel allowance, had been paid up front, with the specific agreement hed stay in the position for two years. If he left before that time was up, he was on the hook for all the moving expenses (which werent cheap). About a year and a half into his contract, he was offered a great opportunity someplace else and decided to resign. Naturally, the company wasnt pleased, and immediately reminded him of the money hed owe upon his departure. Ouch.Suddenly, that new job wasnt making sense financially. If my colleague had taken the time to review his contract, however, he wouldve known he just had to wait six more months, and hed be free to move on. If his new employer couldnt wait that long, then he at least wouldve had the opportunity to factor those moving costs into his salary negotiation. The moral of the story? Before you hand over that resignation letter, make sure youve reviewed your contract with your employer. Whether its checking the length of your contract or finding out if going to a competitor will cause issues, reading the fine print will confirm youre free and clear to resign without it costing you.2. Keep it Under WrapsOnce youve decided to move on, its tempting to share the news with your colleagues. Maybe theyre also considering getting out of there, or maybe you just want to let your work buddies know youre moving on. Regardless of your reasons, though, resist the urge to spill the beans. News of departures travels quickly, and the best way to kill your reputation with your babo is for her to find out youre leaving at the water cooler.I know this because, well, it happened to me early on in my career. I confided in one of my colleagues- someone I trusted- and it turns out, he couldnt keep the secret. Part of the reason I was leaving was because Id been offered a better position with a competitor, so my confidant took it upon himself to covertly alert my manager so she could be ready with a counteroffer when I gave her my notice. While Im sure my colleague really was trying to help, he inadvertently stirred up quite a mess, with me smack in the center. My babo was naturally stressed by being put in the position of having to try to convince me to stay, but she was more upset I hadnt come to her first. And, since shed heard about my exit from someone else, I no longer had any control over how the message was delivered. Instead of getting to explain to her why I was leaving, my boss viewed me as unprofessional and disloyal. Not exactly the way you want to leave a job. While I was able to eventually smooth things over, it definitely wasnt how I wanted the situation to go down.Yes, its going to be tough keeping such big news confidential, but if you can manage to keep it under wraps until youve spoken directly with your boss, youll keep the tone and the delivery of the news under your control. 3. Be Prepared to Be an OutsiderWhile moving on to a new gig may be exciting for you, it might not be so great for the colleagues youre leaving behind. In fact, your departure may spark some pretty intense emotions among your teammates (resentment, jealousy, stress that theyll have to pick up the pieces), which means you might feel like a bit of an outsider once youve given notice.Several years back, I worked with a guy who had a great opportunity to join a competitor and really advance his career. As soon as we all found out, the group was supportive, but it didnt last. Since my colleague was a senior member of the team, hed given over a month of notice, which meant we had several weeks to work with him, knowing he was going to one of our top competitors. Not surprisingly, he was quickly excluded from strategy and team meetings, and eventually happy hours and other office events. While it wasnt easy for him, he recognized this was part of the deal and handled it with grace, which made things a whole lot less awkward for the rest of the team. He ended up leaving on a positive note, with all of us wishing him well on his last day- definitely what you want to happen when you leave a job.Its not fun to think about, but the reality is, when youre leaving a team, its only natural for your colleagues to see you differently after youve resigned. While youll still have to do your job and assure a smooth transition, understanding your team will probably have some mixed emotions about your decision will help you get through your last couple weeks more easily. Most of us will have to resign from at least a few jobs in our career, and every time will be a new challenge. But, keep these tips in mind when youre ready to move on, and youll ensure you leave with high recommendations and your reputation in tact.Photo of man leaving courtesy of Shutterstock.

The 5 Worst Types of Resumes
The 5 Worst Types of Resumes The 5 Worst Types of Resumes As a professional resume writer and career counselor, Ive helped thousands of clients improve their resumes. In that time, Ive also identified five common types of resumesthat actually prevent people from showcasing their best selves. Are you using one of these self-sabotaging resumes? Find out belowResume No. 1 The Task RabbitSigns that your resume falls into this category- Your resume includes details without context or outcomes.- The bullets under each role are less than half a line long.- Your resume gets you callbacks for roles that you are way overqualified for.How Does This Resume Hurt Your Chances? You can easily spot this type of resume because it only lists the most basic aspects of the work that was performed, offeringvery few details about context, scope, or results. This type of resume is common among people who have trouble taking credit for the work that theyve done. The purpose of aresume is to showcase elend o nly the responsibilities that youve had, but also the value youre capable of producing. A great resume can accomplish this by including rich, informative details about both the context of the work performed and the results that youaccomplished. Quick Fix In the first bullet under each role, try to include some details about the company (like yearly revenue or what its specialty is) to provide the reader with somecontext for your work experience.Resume No. 2 The IllustratorSigns that your resume falls into this category- You have an image any image in your resume.- You used Photoshop or Illustrator to develop it.- The actual words make up less than 50 percent of the page. How Does This Resume Hurt Your Chances? If youre in a design-related field, of course you want to showcase your creative skills. However, a portfolio or personal website is likely a more effective way to accomplish this. Too often, the design of the resume takes away from from the actual content, distracting the rea der and leaving little room for the most important, impressive parts the actual descriptions of the work that youve done. Quick Fix Develop a new draft that includes less than 10 percent graphic elements, and then keep track of which version is getting you more calls for interviews.Resume No. 3 The JargonistSigns that your resume falls into this category- A reader would need an advanced degree in your field to understand your resume.- Your bullets are more than two lines long.- Your resume contains actual paragraphs. How Does This Resume Hurt Your Chances?Youve heard the statistic Recruiters spend less than six seconds on each resume. You only have the time it takes a decision-maker to take a first glance at your resume to convince them to look more deeply. If the document looks disorganized, if you appear unqualified for the role, or if the content looks too painful to digest, they will disregard it without a second thought. Quick Fix Pare down the language by including one comma pe r resume bullet. Remember that the HR team is likely bedrngnis trained for your role. Ask someone who is not in your field to cross out any words that they dont understand. You can get technical about your accomplishments during the interview.Resume No. 4 The HistorianSigns that your resume falls into this category- Youve included each and every role that youve ever held and youre not in your earlytwenties.- Your high school diploma is listed on your resume.- Your resume is more than three pages long. How Does This Resume Hurt Your Chances?A resume should normally go back no more than 10-15 years. The main reasons for this? The unfortunate realityof ageism, and the need to fit your work history onto two pages. Perhaps more importantly, your resume should include the highest level of work that youre capable of doing. It should highlight you current abilities while giving the employer a sense of your future potential.By giving valuable resume real estate to tasks that you performed mo re than 15 years ago, you are raising red flags that you havent kept up with how the industry has changed. Plus, think about it If yousat down in front of a computer program that you used more than 15 years ago, would you even remember how to use it? Quick Fix Cap the resume timeline at 15-20 years. If you must include an earlier role (like if you worked for a well-known company as an intern), make sure it is on the second page, and dont allocate more than two bullets to it.Resume No. 5 The Jack of All TradesSigns that your resume falls into this category- You have degrees and/or training in multiple very different fields.- You have so many versions of your resume that you cant keep track of them- Youre using the same resume to apply for roles in several functions/ industriesHow Does This Resume Hurt Your Chances?Ideally, a great resume will provide your fullprofessional narrative, showing employers the skills youve developed and what youre capable of. That being said, aresume is ult imately a marketing document, so you want to give the reader a cohesiveaccount of your professional purpose without confusing them with irrelevant information. An example I completed a furniture-building degree in my earlytwenties. If Im applying for a career-training role, I probably wont include this degree unless a.) the role Im applying for is part of a vocational training program, or b.) I think it will provoke an interesting conversation during the interview. And even then, I would only allocate one or two lines to thedegree.Quick Fix Visualize the role. Print out your resume and review each line, asking yourself Is this directly relevant? for each item. If it is, great If its not, is there a way that you can add details to tie theitem and the role together?Andrea Gerson has more than eight years of experience helping professionals find clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of energy around their work. The History of Taps in the Military
The History of Taps in the MilitaryThe History of Taps in the MilitaryOf all the military bugle calls, none is so easily recognizableor more stirring and able to render emotion than Taps. Up until the Civil War, the traditional call at days end welches a tune borrowed from the French called Lights Out. Then, in the aftermath of the bloody Seven Days battles in July of 1862 and hard on the heels of losing 600 men and being wounded himself, Union General Daniel Adams Butterfield called the brigade bugler to his tent. He thought Lights Out was too formal and he wanted to honor his men with something different. Taps were born. How Taps Came to Be Oliver Wilcox Norton, the bugler, tells the story ...showing me some notlagees on a staff written in pencil on the back of an envelope, (he) asked me to sound them on my bugle. I did this several times, playing the music as written. He changed it somewhat, lengthening some notes and shortening others, but retaining the melody as he first ga ve it to me. After getting it to his satisfaction, he directed me to sound that call for Taps thereafter in place of the regulation call. The music was beautiful on that still summer night and was heard far beyond the limits of our Brigade. The next day I was visited by several buglers from neighboring Brigades, asking for copies of the music which I gladly furnished. The call was gradually taken up through the Army of the Potomac. This more emotive and powerful Tap was soon adopted throughout the military. It was officially recognized by the U.S. Army in 1874, and it became standard at military funeral ceremonies in 1891. Theres something singularly beautiful, mournful, and appropriate in the music of this wonderful call. Its strains are melancholy yet full of rest and peace. Its echoes linger in the heart long after its tones have ceased to vibrate in the air. Why Is It Called Taps? The origin of the word taps is thought to have come from the Dutch word for tattoo, which is ta ptoe. More than likely, Taps comes from the three drum taps that were played as a signal for Extinguish Lights when a bugle was not used in the rendition. As with many other customs, the 24 notes that comprise this solemn tradition began long ago and continues to this day. Official Lyrics Perhaps unsurprisingly given the nature of the songs origin, there are no official lyrics for Taps. The following unofficial verse is often used. The author is not known. Fading light dims the sight,And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright. From afar drawing nigh Falls the night.Day is done, gone the sun,From the lake, from the hills, from the skyAll is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Then good night, peaceful night,Till the light of the dawn shineth brightGod is near, do not fear - Friend, good night. How to Bond With Your Team as a Remote Worker - The Muse
How to Bond With Your Team as a Remote Worker - The MuseHow to Bond With Your Team as a Remote WorkerDear Remote Worker,I love working remotely. But, Ive found that it can be challenging to bond with my anfhrer and my team members when we dont have the luxury of things like lunches and happy hours. How can I forge a solid, somewhat personal relationship with my manager and team when we only ever connect over the internet about work-related matters?Signed,Connecting From AfarDear Connecting From Afar,Im so glad you asked this question, because I know firsthand that its something so many remote workers struggle with. You want to develop strong working relationships, but it can be challenging to do that from a distance.Ill let you in on a little secret I actually work remotely for The Muse, while the rest of my team sits next to each other in the same arbeitszimmer. Despite the fact that Im the one who isnt there, Ive never felt like an outsider.Of course, much of that is owed to my awes ome employer. But, I like to think that Ive had a little to do with the success of this arrangement as well. Here are a few tips Ive put into practice to feel like a core part of the team- regardless of the fact that Im hundreds of miles away. 1. Dont Neglect the Power of Video ChatEmail and instant messaging are convenient, but they dont empower you to make a more personal connection. Thats why Im a big fan of using video chats whenever possible. From our weekly pitch meetings to one-off brainstorming sessions, being able to interact with my team face-to-face makes me feel like Im actually in the room with them. Its the next best thing to actually being there. 2. Get a Little PersonalParticularly when youre remote, its easy to fall into the trap of all work and no play. Because so much of your communication with your colleagues is written, it feels odd to include personal anecdotes or casual small talk. But, that doesnt mean you can never get a little more personal (while always kee ping it appropriate, of course). Whether you want to ask if anybody has recommendations for your upcoming vacation or mention the latest show youre binge-watching, those seemingly inconsequential personal details can go a long way in solidifying your bond. Weve even instituted some different traditions- from sharing photos to ending each meeting on a lighthearted elende- that help us connect over things that dont involve our to-do lists. 3. Schedule Some One-on-One TimeOne-on-one time is something that would naturally happen if you were in the same office as your co-workers. Maybe youd grab coffee with a colleague one day and then have lunch with a different one the next. When you work remotely, its less likely that youll be able to have that time with just one team member at a time- unless you make it happen yourself. For example, I have regular one-on-one video chats scheduled with a few different colleagues. And, when we had a new employee join our team, I reached out to her to set up some time when the two of us could chat directly. That little bit of effort goes a long way in helping you get to know each of your team members- and vice versa. Ive been fortunate enough to get together with my co-workers in-person a couple of times, and I love the opportunity to interact with them outside of a computer screen. However, thats not feasible for everyone. Fortunately, I know from experience that these tactics will help you feel like an equal part of the team- even though youre not in the office.

4 Smart Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Personal Website - The Muse
4 Smart Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Personal Website - The Muse4 Smart Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Personal WebsitePersonal websites are a great place to showcase who you are and what you do, whether youre simply sharing your resume or uploading an entire portfolio. They can also be incredibly helpful in landing new opportunities and growing your career. But heres the thing With a personal website, the rule if you build it they will come doesnt really apply. Unless youre Ariana Grande, you wont automatically rack up thousands of views, clicks, and conversions. You have to put in the work to get people to visit your site. Luckily, there are a lot of solid strategies and resources out there that you can- and should- leverage to get mora besucherzahlen to your website.1. Optimize Your Site for SearchYou may have heard the term SEO (search engine optimization). Broadly speaking, this refers to fine-tuning your website so that search engines (mainly Google) can crawl all the pages and u nderstand what theyre about. The goal is to get your site popping up on page one when someone inputs a relevant search term- which drives more trafficThis may sound a bit intimidating. But thankfully, there are plenty of places to learn about SEO. For example, Squarespace provides a guide to improving your SEO to help you understand some of the ways you can make your site more visible to search engines, plus an SEO checklist you can reference when building your site. (If you have a Squarespace site, theyve also got you covered on the technical elements of SEO.)A few simple ways you can boost your sites visibilityStructure your content with headings. Split up blocks of texts with relevant headings. This makes it easier for both readers and search engines to understand the most important points on every page.Add tags and categories. Categories are a great way to organize content by topic or type, and tags operate like hashtags- they help people find specific things you mentioned more easily, and help search engines understand the topics on your site.Include a site description. This is a small block of text that usually appears below your site title in search results. It tells readers- and yep, search engines- what your site is all about.List your geographical location. This is especially helpful if you only provide services in a specific area.2. Promote It As Much As You CanGood SEO wont do all the work for you. Youve got to promote your site to real live people, too. Try doing the following to help drive your traffic to the next level.Put the URL on all of your profiles. Any social media profiles you have, your LinkedIn, you name it. Its all about exposure, even if a lot of that exposure is passive.Include it in your personal email signature. Think about it- how many emails do you send in a week? (That said, I hope it goes without saying that you should probably leave the URL for your side hustle out of your official work email signature.)Announce it. Share you r site with your Instagram followers, tweet it to the world, send an email to your personal and professional connections. And while you may not want to email people about it more than once, you can plug your site on social media far more frequently- say once a week or a few times a month.Leverage social sharing. Many website builders offer something called social sharing. With this tool, you can link your site to your social media accounts. Every time you publish new content, its pushed to your feeds for your friends and followers to see. All you do is set it up once and voil3. Send Out a Regular NewsletterNewsletters can be a great way to encourage readers to visit your site. Make sure you feature a newsletter sign-up option on your site (on Squarespace, you can do this using Newsletter Blocks), and promote the heck out of it.You can use your newsletter to tell your target audience what youre up to, share new content from your site, advertise your services, even provide extra tips and advice. Your newsletter doesnt need to be every week, nor does it need to be an incredibly heavy lift. But you should be consistent and always provide some value. Otherwise, your newsletter will end up hanging out in everyones spam folders.4. Analyze Traffic DataYou opened this article because you wanted to figure out how to increase traffic to your website, right? If thats your goal, you need to pay attention to the numbers. Not just because math is fun (or is that just me?), but because Squarespace traffic analytics can help you see if all your efforts are fruitful and where you could make some changes. Here are some examples of data points you might track.Unique Visitors How many people are coming to your site?Popular Content When users get to your website, what pages do they spend time on?Traffic Sources Are people finding your site directly (because you texted or emailed them the link), via social media or your newsletter, or through organic search? You can even break it do wn to see which social media channel is most popular.Image courtesy of Squarespace.comAgain, this isnt just for fun. Youll want to track the data, interpret it, and take action. For instance, lets say you see a spike in traffic one day. When you dig a little further, you see that most of it came from Twitter. Youd only been posting on Twitter a few times a month, but after seeing this result, you decide to up the frequency to twice a week.Or lets say you analyze your traffic sources and see that almost no one clicked through to the site from your newsletter. You spend a lot of time on that newsletter, and it doesnt seem to be paying off, so you decide to table it for now and revamp it later. Now, you can spend that allotted time on other more fruitful efforts. As much as Id like to tell you that theres a magic spell thatll automatically send your traffic numbers through the roof, well, that just doesnt exist. The good news is, with a little bit of effort, you can start bringing the c licks- and the opportunities- your way. Good luck
